In the run up to Black Friday I received about a dozen emails from customers asking if we would be offering any discounts over the weekend. I had indeed been toying with the idea of discounting some products to join in with the spirit of it all but when I thought about that 'spirit' the whole idea of it just didn't sit right with me.
I'm not usually preachy about these things but I just don't see the point of the imported mass consumerism of 'Black Friday', something that large retailers have bought over from the USA. I am aware of the counter movements that exist such as Buy Nothing Day and also how some companies give their staff the day off in a vague protest against the idea.
We are not big enough as a company to offer deep discounts, I have no staff to give an unpaid day off to. However I thought we could instead donate a small percentage of what we took over the weekend from online sales and in person at the weekend events. It's not much but it will make a small difference somewhere.
I let those customers who had asked about discounts know that is what we were going to do and I am happy to say that most of them all bought items at full price over the weekend. We also made our customers in Cowbridge know our plans, many of whom put not insignificant amounts of change in our Macmillan box. Thank you to those customers too.
We will be donating £88.00 to Macmillan this week and I would like to thank everybody that knew about this and donated extra or bought from the online store knowing we would be giving 10% of sales plus I would match that amount out of my own pocket.
This is something that I will continue to do every Black Friday from now on. I chose Macmillan this year as it is an organisation that I have personal experience with and means a lot to me however I will rotate the chosen charity annually. There are many good causes for us to consider and we will let everybody know in early November who we will be donating to. The Macmillan box is with us until full and is where all of those 1ps and 2ps go to live when you say 'keep the change'.
